As you may know, I live on the West side of Houston, Texas and while we were extremely fortunate to make it through Hurricane Harvey unscathed, many many others have lost everything.
Hurricane Harvey dumped over 9 trillion gallons of water on our city. Now is the time to band together and help one another.
Here are some ways you can help right now:
Donate Blood
The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center
South Texas Blood and Tissue Center
Live outside of Texas? You can donate blood through the Red Cross.
Donate Food
Food Bank of the Golden Crescent
Donate Money
The Greater Houston Community Foundation
You can help Hurricane Harvey victims by texting HARVEY to 90999 to give $10 to the Red Cross (or by visiting RedCross.org to give any other amount)
The Center for Disaster Philanthropy
Portlight Strategies is working to help older adults and those with disabilities. Donate here.
Donate supplies or funds for children with complex medical needs to Little Lobbyists.
Volunteer Your Time
Volunteer Houston has a virtual Volunteer Reception Center to assist nonprofit agencies with flood relief efforts. Read more here.
Are you in DFW? Register to help at shelters through the Mass Care Task Force.
The Red Cross needs musicians to play at Austin-area evacuation shelters.
Help Animals Affected by Hurricane Harvey
If you see a stranded marine animal, call the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Southeast Regional Office at 1-877-942-5343.
Animal Defense League of Texas
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Texas is helping displaced animals.
You can donate at www.spca.org/give or sign up to adopt a displaced animal at www.spca.org/foster.
This is a just tiny fraction of the ways you can help victims of Hurricane Harvey. I hope you find something here that moves you to give of yourself in some way. If not, just google help Hurricane Harvey victims and you’re sure to find more ways to give. Thanks for pitching in. Every little bit helps.
Houston is an AMAZING city, and I know we’ll come back from this, TOGETHER.
